GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Southern Virginia University men's swim team traveled to Pennsylvania over the weekend to face off against a tough Gettysburg team, falling to the Bullets 133-72.
The first win of the day for the Knights came in the 200 yard freestyle where
Stuart Burbidge earned the team nine points. The race was neck and neck from the start with Gettysburg's Luke McKenna staying with Burbidge the entire way. Burbidge would get to the wall first, winning by just over a tenth of a second.
In the next men's event, the 50 free, Southern Virginia got their second victory.
Parker Kam reached the wall with time of 21.54, a whole second faster than the next finisher.
The 100 yard butterfly saw
Josh Skabelund and
Josh Axtell finish first and second respectively to earn a total of 13 points for the Knights.
Freshman Carson Macdonald performed exceptionally in the 100 freestyle, finishing second.
Parker Kam would get his second individual win of the meet in the 100 yard backstroke, coming in with a time of 54.32, over two second faster than Jack Murphy from Gettysburg who finished second.
In one of the longest individual events of the day, the 500 yard free, Burbidge had another stellar race, getting to the wall in 5:15.47, good for third.
Freshman Caleb Wynn battled with Declan Sheeran for the Bullets in the 100 breaststroke. The two were side by side throughout the entire 100 yards with their 50 times being just one one-hundredth apart with Sheeran clinging to the advantage. He would pull away in the last 50 yards to win by a margin of less than one second.
The next and final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay, featured another close finish. The team of
Parker Kam, Carson Macdonald, Joshua Skabelund and
Stuart Burbidge got to the wall just over a tenth of a second behind a Gettysburg team.
"The men's team fought hard against a strong team," said head coach
Jennifer Moore after the meet. "I'm proud of the way these guys came together as a team and raced strong. It's only the beginning of what will be a fantastic season."
Southern Virginia will host its final home meet of the season against Hampden-Sydney on Friday, November 4 at the Rockbridge Aquatics Center. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. with the seniors being honored just before.
