Knights dominate Hampden-Sydney

Knights Take Down Tigers on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's swim team took down Hampden-Sydney College Friday night, with a final score of 110-56, giving seniors Joshua Skabelund and Travis Lott a triumph in their final home meet.

In the first men's event of the meet, the 200 yard medley relay, the Knights two teams competing would finish first and second. Parker Kam got his team off to a great start with an outstanding backstroke. Matthew Rose would gain some ground on Kyle Hedden in the breaststroke. Joshua Skabelund and Josh Axtell would have excellent last two legs to bring home the victory for the team comprised of Lane Evans, Rose, Skabelund and Axtell. The other team, made up of Kam, Hedden, Lincoln Garcia and Porter Jones would finish in second.

The longest event of the evening, the 1000 yard freestyle, featured just one Southern Virginia swimmer, Stuart Burbidge, who held the lead the entire race would finish with a time of 10:48.30.

Benjamin Landheim dominated from the get-go in the 200 free. He would win with a 1:53.36 time. Hedden would finish just behind Landheim.

The shortest race of the meet, the 50 yard freestyle, featured a Southern Virginia sweep. Skabelund got a great jump off the block, propelling him to an early lead. Burbidge gave it his all to catch his teammate but Skabelund would do enough to get to the wall and finish first with Burbidge coming in second and Jones in third.

Caleb Wynn was the only Knight competitor in the 200 yard individual medley. He got off the block quickly, giving him an early lead in the first leg, the butterfly. Wynn would maintain his lead through the next three legs to win with a 2:02.27 time.

In the next event, the 200 yard butterfly, Matthew Rose would come in first with a time of 2:04.58.

In the following event, the 100 freestyle, the Knights would get another win with Skabelund earning his second triumph of the meet.

Parker Kam would get his first individual victory of the evening in the 200 yard backstroke. After getting off to a quick start to build an early lead he would never look back, finishing with a 2:03.59.

Caleb Wynn would get his second triumph of the meet in the 500 yard freestyle, getting to the wall with a time of 5:03.76.

The Knights would close out the meet with another win in the final event of the evening, the 400 free relay. The team of Parker Kam, Josh Axtell, Benjamin Landheim and Austin Barton would end with a 3:22.72.

"This meet was so much fun," exclaimed Landheim. "Getting to cheer each other on and be a part of that experience is so amazing. It really is like a family. You want the very best for one another. I'm just so grateful that I get to play a part in that."

Southern Virginia will have two weeks to prepare for the Pacer Invitational in Cary, North Carolina. The two-day event begins Friday, November 18.
