Southern Virginia Men's Volleyball Sweeps Immaculata and Mount St. Joseph

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team locked in two wins Saturday afternoon, sweeping Immaculata and Mount St. Joseph's in Knight Arena.

Game Notes 

Game One

  • The Knights set up a comfortable 11-7 lead in the first set, before Wayne Baldwin sparked a 6-1 scoring run to extend their lead to nine points 17-8
  • Southern Virginia closed out the set with a 7-2 run led by two Ben Barrus aces to take the first set 25-12
  • Starting the second set, Tanner Durkin recorded two aces to lead the team to a 6-0 lead
  • Immaculata fought back, making the score 12-10, but the Knights displayed their dominance, going up 21-13 with the help of three Wayne Baldwin aces
  • Baldwin recorded the final two kills of the set to lock in the team's 25-18 set win 
  • The Mighty Macs held the 6-5 advantage early in the final set, but Kyler Evans entered the game and sparked an 11-1 run to go up 16-7
  • Southern Virginia completed the sweep with a final kill from Steve Rasmussen, taking the set 25-15

Game Two

  • The Knights held the 11-9 advantage before taking advantage of a service error to go on a 4-1 scoring run to make the new score 15-10
  • Both teams went back and forth before Christian Sheaffer recorded the final kill of the set to take the 1-0 lead 
  • The second set saw Southern Virginia and Mount St. Joseph go back and forth, with the Knights eventually taking the 15-11 lead
  • The Knights went on to outscore the Lions 10-8, with a final ace from Paul Candland to take the second set 25-19 
  • Midway through the final set of the match, both teams were locked at 16
  • A block from Paul Candland and McKay Walker sparked a 7-0 scoring run to take the 23-16 lead
  • Nahuel recorded the final kill of the match, completing the sweep 3-0

Southern Virginia takes on Randolph-Macon on Thursday, February 17, on the road. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
