NEWARK, NJ. — The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team took on Rutgers-Newark in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Championship game Saturday night, with the Knights falling to the Scarlet Raiders 3-1.
Game Notes
- Nahuel Recabarren led the team with 15 kills while tallying seven digs and seven blocks
- Paul Candland had a solid night, recording ten kills while Kaipo Tagaloa dished out 26 assists
- In the first set, both teams were evenly matched, with Rutgers holding onto the 18-17 lead
- The Raiders pulled ahead 21-17, maintaining their lead the remainder of the set to take the 1-0 lead in the game
- Rutgers owned the second set, holding a 13-10 advantage midway through the second
- A 5-0 scoring run put Rutgers up 18-11 and never looked back, taking the 2-0 lead in the game with a 25-17 set two win
- Southern Virginia answered confidently in the third set, using an 8-2 scoring run midway through the set, led by kills from Recabarren and Candland, to jump ahead 17-15
- A final kill from Recabarren prevented the sweep, forcing a fourth set, taking the third 25-22
- Rutgers wasted no time in the fourth set, dominating the Knights 25-17 to win their first CVC Championship since 2015
Southern Virginia will wait for the 2022 NCAA Selection Show to determine their fate of receiving an at-large bid to the tournament.
