Lynchburg, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's and women's swim teams traveled south over the weekend for a dual with the Hornets from Lynchburg. In one of their final tune-ups before the Independent South Championships, the Knights suffered a loss to the ODAC powerhouse.

While wins were hard to come by most of the afternoon, the women's team collected a thrilling victory in the competition's first event. The quartet of Rylee Nugent, Mia Fuhriman, Jamie Horne, and Jesi Fuhriman held on in the final strokes to secure a victory in the 4x200-yard relay. Their time of 1:56.41 was a full second ahead of Lynchburg.

The Knights experienced several close finishes on the women's side, including Jamie Horne and Jesi Fuhriman, who finished less than a second behind the winner in four different events. Fuhriman's finish in the 100-yard breaststroke proved one of the most exciting in the meet. Her time of 1:13. 49 was just over half a second behind the winner. In the 500 freestyle event, Jamie Horne dueled with two Hornets and finished in second as all three swimmers finished within two seconds of each other.

On the men's side, Roman Nowell produced several good results, capturing second place in the 50 free and 100 fly with times of 22.69 and 54.67, respectively. He also nearly out-touched a Lynchburg swimmer for the 100 free crown with a time of 49.95. He was also an important Southern Virginia Medley relay team member, swimming the butterfly leg. 

In all, the Knights collected eight top-two finishes and performed admirably against stiff competition. Looking ahead, they'll compete against St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, February 1st, at 1:00 PM. They'll look to use this final regular-season meet to build momentum leading into the Independent South Championships three weeks from now.
