Southern Virginia Swimming Concludes Final Tune-Up Before Conference Championships

St. Mary's City, MD - As the regular season winds down, the Southern Virginia University men's and women's swim teams traveled north to St. Mary's College of Maryland for their final dual meet of the season. While both teams ended the day with losses, many exceptional swims should leave the team in good spirits heading into the postseason.

Women's Results

Similar to their meet last weekend, the women's team opened the competition with a convincing victory in the 4x200 medley relay. The quartet of Rylee Nugent, Mia Fuhriman, Jamie Horne, and Jesi Fuhriman posted the Knights second best time of the season to give them an early advantage. Mia Fuhriman grabbed the next event win for the Knights in the 100 breaststroke which was the first of four individual victories at the meet.

Her sister, Jesi, was dialed in during the freestyle events. She cruised to a win in the 50 by nearly a full second and finished a close second in the 100 not long after. In her first time participating in the event this season, Arianna Burgan led at each wall on her way to dominating the 200 backstroke, winning in a time of 2:35.61. Amelia Beckstead also led the entire way in the 200 breaststroke to claim her second win in the event this season with a time of 2:46.72.

Jamie Horne collected valuable points with second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke and butterfly.

Men's Results

While St. Mary's depth proved to be too much for the men's side, the Knights battled hard and came out of the weekend with several quality performances. Roman Nowell led the way by finishing second in three different events, the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 100 butterfly. The closest Southern Virginia came to individual glory was Grayson Garcia in the 100 free. Garcia's time of 51.89 was just half a second after the winner hit the wall.

Enoch Zimmerman's close second place in the 200 butterfly and Carter Long's two-second-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM were other highlights for the men's team.

  • Roman Nowell - 2nd, 200 Free (1:53.99) | 2nd, 50 Free (22.89) | 2nd, 100 Fly (54.09)

  • Grayson Garcia - 2nd, 100 Free (51.89)
