Southern Virginia University Names Paul Lasike as Head Rugby Coach

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Southern Virginia University Athletic Director Josh Monsen has announced the hiring of Paul Lasike as the new head coach of the men's rugby program. Lasike is a former USA Rugby World Cup player, NFL fullback, and collegiate coach who brings elite playing and coaching experience to the program.

"I am thrilled to have Paul join our coaching staff," said Monsen. "He embodies everything we look for in a leader—he is a man of faith, academically driven, and athletically accomplished, with a strong commitment to mentoring student-athletes both on and off the field. He's the perfect fit for our rugby program."

Lasike brings with him an impressive résumé as both a player and coach. He is currently a professional rugby player with the Utah Warriors, where he was the first player ever signed by the franchise and has served as a team captain. He also played internationally for the USA Men's National Team, competing in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Lasike additionally, spent four years overseas playing professionally for the Harlequins Rugby Club in the United Kingdom.

Before a professional career in rugby, Lasike played fullback in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and was a dual-sport athlete at Brigham Young University, where he starred in both rugby and football. Lasike also holds a bachelor's degree in Physical Education Teaching/Coaching from BYU. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Birmingham, Alabama.

On the coaching side, Lasike has most recently served as the backs coach on BYU's women's rugby team and as head coach of the Gray Wolves, a Utah-based team that feeds into the Warriors' pro program. His leadership has helped numerous local athletes sign professional contracts.

"There's so much potential to take this program to the next level," Lasike said. "We'll focus on building from our current foundation, identifying areas for improvement, and strengthening them through recruiting quality players and people. It's about establishing standards, creating a strong team culture, and developing a clear identity. It won't happen overnight, but I'm excited for the challenge and what's ahead."

Lasike's arrival marks an exciting new chapter for SVU Rugby. With his leadership, the program is poised to grow in culture and unity. Southern Virginia University is energized by the vision he brings, and there is a shared optimism as they look ahead to the future of Southern Virginia men's rugby.
