Southern Virginia University Honors Retiring Baseball Head Coach Jerry Schlegelmilch

BUENA VISTA, Va. — After more than five decades in coaching, Southern Virginia University head baseball coach Jerry Schlegelmilch—affectionately known as "Coach Schleg"—has officially announced his retirement.

In recognition of his remarkable service to the sport and the university, Southern Virginia took time to honor and celebrate the profound influence he's had on the program and its student-athletes.

Schlegelmilch spent 12 seasons at the helm of Knight Baseball, earning over 120 wins and becoming a cornerstone of the program's identity and growth. His career spanned more than 50 years, defined by a deep commitment to mentorship, character-building, and personal development.

"To end my 51-year coaching career at Southern Virginia University has been one of the greatest blessings of my life," said Coach Schlegelmilch. "The 12 years I spent as head coach have been a wonderful, positive experience for me and my family."

"Coach Schleg wasn't just about wins and losses," said Southern Virginia University Athletic Director Josh Monsen. "He's about the student-athletes—building character, lifting spiritually and academically, and serving as a wonderful mentor. He has done tremendous work for Southern Virginia University Baseball, which cannot go unnoticed. Thank you for every inning, every lesson, and every moment."

Schlegelmilch grew up in the Los Angeles area and played college baseball while earning his degree at California State Polytechnic University—Pomona. In 1968, he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and played as a first baseman and outfielder at the Single-A level, attending spring training and remaining with the organization through 1971. He was later traded to the San Diego Padres, where he played two additional seasons before stepping away from pro ball to accept a coaching position at Rio Hondo College—a pivotal decision that launched his decades-long coaching career.

He began that journey at age 26, spending 17 years establishing a respected program at Rio Hondo. He later served as an assistant coach at Brigham Young University and then spent 11 years as head coach at Ricks College (now BYU–Idaho), leading the team until the school transitioned away from intercollegiate athletics.

Schlegelmilch first joined Southern Virginia in 2002 and returned in 2019. Beyond the wins, he was known for his emphasis on academic success, spiritual growth, and leadership—values he instilled in every player he coached.

"I've loved and appreciated the coaches, administrators, and players I've had the privilege to work with and compete against," he said. "Together, we developed a very competitive program—and the new coach will have a great start with their own field. I wish the school and everyone connected with the baseball program the best of luck in the future."

He championed discipline, academic success, and spiritual growth—consistently instilling in his players the values of integrity, humility, and resilience. From California to Idaho to Virginia, his teams were built to lead and grow.

"I coached for my players both on and off the field and enjoyed every day," Schlegelmilch continued. "I especially want to thank Deidra Dryden, who has been a friend and my greatest support since the very beginning in 2002. When we said goodbye, we both shed tears—a reflection of the mutual respect and friendship we've shared."

Thank you, Coach Schleg—for every player, every game, and every chapter of your extraordinary journey. Your impact will remain forever woven into the fabric of Knight Baseball.
