Buena Vista, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team capped off the 2025 season with a milestone year, recording 15 wins—its highest win total since joining the USA South—and earning the program's first-ever victory in the USA South Baseball Conference Tournament.
The Knights were powered by a dynamic mix of experienced returners and promising newcomers, making 2025 a season defined by growth and breakthrough performances.
Leading the charge was junior Zack Geertsen, who followed up a historic debut season with even better numbers in his second year. Geertsen earned D3baseball.com All-Region Second Team honors for the second consecutive year, posting a .431 batting average and a .516 on-base percentage, both of which ranked among the best in the conference. His 69 hits set a new program single-season record.
Sophomore Garrett Stauffer emerged as a major offensive force, batting .387 with a .462 OBP, earning a spot on the USA South All-Conference Team and providing a consistent spark for the Knights.
The senior class left a lasting mark on the program, with six players honored for their contributions:
-
Harrison Moore, a key player on the mound, logged 73 career innings.
-
Mitch Smith, a five-year standout, finished with a career .307 batting average, 163 hits, and 14 home runs.
-
Benjamin Horsley contributed 86 hits, 17 doubles, and 45 RBIs across four seasons and earned All-Tournament honors in his final campaign.
-
Stockton Hall, also an All-Conference selection, boasted a 2.08 ERA in 26 innings and 56 hits offensively.
-
Rock Giles pitched over 89 career innings as a consistent arm in the rotation.
-
David Hunley brought important defense to the outfield and also energy to the plate with 22 hits, 30 runs, and 35 walks.
Upperclassmen Seth Lloyd and Ryan Farris anchored the defense, with Lloyd tallying a team-high 113 assists and Farris catching eight runners stealing behind the plate.
On the mound, Jeffrey Hill, Harrison Moore, and Carson Bybee each logged over 40 innings, providing depth to the rotation.
The freshman class also made an immediate impact. Mason Jones and Conner Robley impressed with their versatility in the field and at the plate. Newcomers Javari Christopher and Garrett Johansen added more depth to the bullpen.
The Knights also made program history by placing two players on the USA South Conference All-Tournament Team for the first time, with Marcelino Leonardo Jr. recognized at third base and Benjamin Horsley in the outfield.
As the program enters a new chapter, Southern Virginia is currently conducting a national search for a new head coach following the retirement of Coach Jerry Schlegelmilch, who concluded a remarkable 51-year coaching career—including 12 seasons with the Knights.
With a new field on the horizon and strong returning talent, the Knights are poised to build upon this season's momentum and take another step forward in 2026.
