Southern Virginia University Announces Athletic Training Staff Updates

Buena Vista, VA - Southern Virginia University Director of Athletics, Josh Monsen, has released updates to the university's athletic training staff ahead of the 2025-2026 academic year. Forrest Sutherland has been named Head Athletic Trainer and will lead the team of Brandon Archibald, Nancy Lim, Elizabeth Haynie, and Emma Risk.

"We're thrilled to see Forrest step into this leadership role," said Monsen. "His dedication and expertise have been instrumental in the outstanding work done this past year."

Monsen also went on to cite the work of the returning staff, all of whom worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the student-athletes during the spring semester as they searched for additional training staff.

"I am immensely grateful for the near-impossible achievements and consistent high-level performance of Brandon and Nancy this past year. Their efforts have made a lasting impact on our department. We're also excited to welcome our two newest training staff, Elizabeth and Emma. They truly stood out in the hiring process, and we eagerly anticipate their contributions."

Southern Virginia now fields a team of five athletic trainers. They own a wide range of experience in sports medicine and are motivated to provide student-athletes with the best possible care.

"I'm excited to move into this new role," said Sutherland. "We have the history of a strong athletic training department, and I'm looking forward to helping that continue. We have a great returning staff in Brandon Archibald and Nancy Lim, as well as our two additions, Elizabeth Haynie and Emma Risk, who will fit in perfectly with our team."

Meet The Team

Forrest Sutherland - Head Athletic Trainer: Sutherland has been with the Southern Virginia training staff for six years and will begin his first year as Head Athletic Trainer. He graduated from Weber State University with a BS in Athletic Training in 2019. Forrest was behind the bench for the Southern Virginia men's volleyball team when they won the university's first-ever NCAA Championship in April.

Brandon Archibald - Athletic Trainer: Archibald has been with the Knights since 2021. He played a crucial role during the most recent spring, as the training staff provided quality care and protection to over 20 varsity sports during the busiest portion of the athletics calendar with just three full-time trainers. In 2020, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Athletic Training.

Nancy Lim - Athletic Trainer: Lim enters her third year as an Athletic Trainer for Southern Virginia athletics. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 2023 with a Master's in Athletic Training. While pursuing her Master's degree, she worked as a student trainer at Intermountain Health and Lehi High School. Lim was also an integral member of the athletic training staff during the busy spring season.

Emma Risk - Athletic Trainer: A new addition to the team, Risk comes from Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked with Banner Sports Medicine and spent three years as the Head Athletic Trainer of Benjamin Franklin High School. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 2020 with a BS in Sports Medicine. More recently, Risk obtained an MA in Business Leadership from Ottawa University.

Elizabeth Haynie - Athletic Trainer: Also new to Southern Virginia this year, Haynie earned her BS in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University in the spring, as well as a Master's in Athletic Training. Over the last four years, she's gained experience with several teams, including BYU's swim and dive, football, and men's lacrosse programs. She's advised student-athletes at several high schools in the Salt Lake Valley and most recently served as a Clinical 2 Teacher's Assistant.
