BRIDGEPORT, W.V. - The Southern Virginia University men's and women's swim teams rang in the new year at a tri-meet hosted by Salem University. It's the team's first meet since November as they close in on the Independent South Championships. 

Men's Results 

The men started things off on the right foot by taking a narrow victory in the men's 200y medley relay, half a second ahead of Frostburg. Caleb Dixon and Holton Bundy were back to their winning ways, claiming the 100y back and 100y breast in back-to-back events.

Ben Thorne, a newcomer this semester, also made his presence known by outpacing the field in the 50y freestyle, clocking in at 22.71.

Bundy also went on to claim the 200y breast in a season's best time of 2:18.11, nearly ten seconds ahead of the next closest finisher. The men closed out their day with a second place finish in the 200 free relay.

Women's Results

The women also produced strong performances and ended the day with three first place finishes. Olive King used a strong closing lap to come out on top in the 200y free, overcoming a nearly two second deficit before the final lap.

After finishing runner-up in the 50y free, Jamie Horne claimed the 100y free in a time of 56.76. Courtney Thueson, another newcomer this semester, swam well enough for second in the 100y breaststroke, recording the Knights' best time in the event this season.

Looking Ahead

Southern Virginia will host its only home meet of the season on Saturday, January 17th at 4:00 PM. It will also serve as the Knights' senior day.

They compete against Roanoke in the Rockbridge Aquatic Center, less than four weeks out from the Independent South Championship meet.
