LEXINGTON/LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams were back to work over the weekend, competing in two meets, the Darius Dixon Memorial in Lynchburg and VMI Winter Classic in Lexington.
Men's Results
The men were steady through all event areas. Sawyer Apple continued his impressive run in the 60m hurdles, establishing a personal best of 8.75 which sits top 20 in the South Region.
Jak Martin brought home the lone individual win during the weekend for the Knights, taking down the field in the pole vault after a clearance of 4.35m (14' 3.25"). AJ Word was another standout field performer, producing personal bests in the long and triple jump.
Women's Results
On Saturday afternoon, the all-star group of Amee Newman, Tessa Miller, Emma Hillam, and Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong threw down one of the top times in the country in the DMR.
As the lone Division lll group in a field loaded with Division l programs, the Knights clocked in at 12:18.34, good for second in the South Region and No. 14 in all of Division lll.
Two additional program records were broken, with Redd-Armstrong in the 3K who became the first women at Southern Virginia under 10 minutes in the event. She finished in 9:52.02, a top 40 time nationally.
Marin Simons had her best-ever performance in the high jump indoors, clearing 1.65m (5' 5") on her second attempt to claim second and establish a new record. She was also the top Division lll finisher.
Looking Ahead
The team has one more weekend of competition before entering the postseason. They'll participate in the Rockingham Collegiate Classic, hosted by Bridgewater, this Friday and Saturday at the Rockingham Rec Center.
