BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia football team faced off
against a rushing juggernaut in Brevard, and could not slow the run
game, as the Tornadoes ran to a 69-7 win. BC ran for 519-yards, and
never let the Knights really get in to the game. The Tornadoes
scored at least two touchdowns in each quarter, and started
brightly as they marched 68-yards in 10-plays to get the early
score within the first five minutes of the game.
SVU could not get anything going on the offensive end, and was
forced to punt. A Matt Mellor punt pinned the visitors deep in
their end, and SVU caught a break on the Tornadoes' drive. A
dropped pitch fell in to the hands of Robert Williams who streaked
in for 16-yard fumble return touchdown. The 7-7 score line gave the
hosts hope, and they looked to shut down a rushing attack that was
finding its way on the Parry McCluer High School field.
A BC 53-yard rush sliced through the Knights' defense, and had
them on their heels. Brevard quickly moved the ball after the big
gain, and had a four-yard touchdown to go up on the Knights. Dylan Dikes blocked the PAT, and it looked like the Knights would take
momentum from the special teams play.
SVU was able to avoid a quick three-and-out, when Zach Garner
hit Derek Chapman for an 11-yard pass. The Knights bogged down on
the following four plays, and handed the ball to the visitors on
downs. The 13-7 score line would represent the closest SVU would
get in the game, as Brevard would march 45-yards for another
touchdown.
Things did not get better for the hosts, as all of their drives
would end with punts or turnovers on downs. SVU was able to get a
stop in the second quarter, but Brevard's ground attack was proving
to be too potent to stop. All but one score for the Tornadoes came
from the ground attack. The visitors used the clock to their
advantage, as all but one scoring drive encompassed over
45-yards.
Garner had a solid outing, with a 12-for-21 afternoon for
126-yards. Steven Scott led the Knights with 9-rushes for 45-yards.
Ryan McGinn pulled in 4-catches for 50-yards, and a long of 20. SVU
had 202-yards of offense, and led both teams with 149-yards through
the air.
Brett Kassel led the Knights on the defensive end, as he
recorded 7-total tackles. Williams' fumble recovery for a touchdown
was one of the highlights for the Knights on the defensive side of
the ball. Pres Crawford also put in a solid effort, with 6-total
tackles, and a half tackle for loss.
SVU will look to regroup as they look to NCAA D.III foe
Bridgewater. The game, scheduled for Sep. 30 will take place at a
neutral venue in Salem, VA. The 7:30 start time will be the first
meeting between the Knights, and the perennial ODAC power Golden
Eagles. The game will also be a charity match, as all gate receipts
will go to the Feed America Southwest Virginia chapter charity.
