BUENA VISTA, Va. Visiting Roanoke College used an overwhelming
first and second set to sweep past the Southern Virginia volleyball
team, 3-0. The Knights started sluggishly in the first set, and the
Maroons jumped to an insurmountable lead. The visitors were able
maintain a constant offensive attack, as they scored 15-consecutive
points to ease to a 25-5 set win.
The Knights woke up some in the second set behind 3-kills from
Roxanne Krieger. Despite the improved offensive output the hosts
were suffering from poor passing, and could not overcome
ball-handling errors which set them back in the attempt to even up
the match. Roanoke was able go on another offensive run, and put
the set away at 25-13.
Heading in to the third set, SVU finally was able to put up a
fight to extend the match. Roanoke jumped to a quick lead, but the
Knights fought back behind 3-kills from Tori Tuttle. The offense
was much improved, and the team was able to push the Maroons to
18-18, and then 23-23. Roanoke took a small lead at 24-23, but the
Knights buckled down to tie up the set. Getting the match to 25-25,
SVU looked to have momentum to go to the fourth set. Roanoke had
other plans, and closed out the Knights with two successive points
for the match win.
Bryndy Anderson led the Knights with 5-kills. Nicole Gwynn added
21-assists for the Knights. The loss drops the team to 6-10 on the
season. SVU will return to action Oct. 4 when they host Ferrum in
Knight Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
