BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Volleyball team was able
to win the first set of the match against Concord, but faltered in
the following three sets, and lost 3-1 to the Mountain Lions. SVU
had run out 25-20 winners in the first set behind strong play from
Shyanne Ison and Paige Allred, who combined for 6-kills, and drove
he hosts to the early lead in the match.
SVU would not hold on for long in the lead, as Concord whittled
away a second set lead, and then took over for the ultimate set
win, and match tie. SVU could not overcome the momentum of the
Mountain Lions, and saw CU jump to early leads in the third and
fourth set. Each time, SVU would mount small comebacks, but the
visitors did enough in response to keep the hosts at bay.
CU took the third and fourth set 25-19, and 25-20. The rout of
the Knights moved the team to 1-4 on the season. Ali Krebs led the
Knights with 30-assists, but the effort would not be enough. Nicole Gwynn was kept busy, as she recorded 23-di from the libero
position.
SVU ill return to action Sept. 10 when they travel the short
distance to Lexington, VA., and a spot in the W&L Invitational.
The Knights will take on McDaniel and Transylvania on Friday, and
then compete against the hosts, Washington & Lee, and Averett
on Saturday.
