Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as the No. 13 Captains of Christopher Newport University swept the Knights 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-20) Wednesday night at The Freeman Center in Newport News, Virginia.

The Captains (20-3, 2-0 CAC) made quick work of the Knights (13-7, 1-1 CAC) in the opening set, rattling off short rallies of three to four points early on before earning six consecutive points midway through to go up 20-8. After a CNU service error, the Captains scored five more unanswered points to finish off the frame as the Knights committed three attack errors in the final moments.

Christopher Newport jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second set and gradually built a 10-5 lead after a service error.  The Captains then went on a 5-0 run to go up 15-5 following a kill by CNU's Eliza Fisher. The teams traded points the remainder of the frame for the Captains to earn an eventual 25-14 set victory.

Southern Virginia found success in the third set as the Knights built an early 6-3 lead following a few Captain attack errors and three consecutive kills by freshman Vanessa Pawlak. With the set tied at 8-8, the Captains went on a 6-0 run to go up 14-8 and never looked backed as the teams exchanged points the rest of the way for an eventual 25-20 Captain set victory.

Pawlak led the Knights in kills with six on the evening while fellow freshman Hannah Phillips tallied four kills. Setters Valerie Arkansas and Katelynn Tlustek each contributed six assists. Defensively, sophomore April Bennett led the Knights with nine digs while Eaton and Melissa Owen teamed up for seven block assists.

The Captains' Briana Sutton earned 10 kills for the night while Hannah Miller had eight. Rachel Conway guided the CNU attack with 16 assists.

Southern Virginia returns to action on Saturday with a Homecoming matchup with CAC opponent York College. The first serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Knight Sports Arena in Buena Vista, Virginia.
