Baseball Falls in Two Games at Frostburg State

Box Score

By Laura Tome

BUENA VISTA, Va—The Southern Virginia University baseball team headed to Cumberland, Md. to play a neutral doubleheader against Capital Athletic Conference foe Frostburg State Thursday afternoon and fell in both games, 4-0 and 7-3.

Southern Virginia's Chris Madison went six innings on the mound for the first game while Frostburg State's Austin Poretz earned the win after seven complete innings.

Both teams struggled to sting hits early in game one. Third baseman Zach Weiss started off the third inning with a single through the left side and second baseman Ricky Castro found his way to the bases. Weiss scored off a sac fly by Dylan Shupe. Castro crossed the plate after Kam Stweart reached first off a fielding error by the Knights.

The Bobcats scored again in the fifth inning. Weiss once again found his way to second base after a shot down the right field line. Castro singled to the right side and scored Weiss. Stewart then had a deep shot over the left field fence to score the last run of the game and earn his first homerun of the season.

Hunter Allen, Tyler King, C.J. Andrus and Mitch Mantle pulled off hits for the Knights, but were left stranded throughout the game.

The Knights came back in game two and scored first after taking advantage of Bobcat errors in the second inning. Jordan Keefer reached first on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Hunter Allen was also walked and then stole second to draw a throw and score Keefer.

The Bobcats answered back with six runs in the bottom of the second. Ricky Brady doubled to right field to start the rally for the Bobcats. Brandon Remalia tripled to right center and scored Brady. Catcher Zach Keeler, who made the throwing error to allow the Knights' first run, singled up the middle and brought in Remalia. Nick McElfish hit a homer over left center to add two RBI.

Weiss hit another single up the middle to keep things going. Castro doubled to left field, after which Justin Cooper was relieved by Jeremy Walker on the mound for the Knights. Weiss advanced to third and scored on Kevin Kean's sac fly. Shupe struck out swinging for the second. Stewart hit a single to bring in one more run. Stewart was then caught stealing to close the inning.

Two innings later, the Knights answered back with two runs. Andrew Price started off with a single to the right side. Mantle reached first on a fielding error. Andrus hit a single to center to bring in Price and move Mantle to third. Ryan Gabriel hit a shot to left field to score Mantle and cut the lead by three.

The Bobcats scored one last run in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler King took the mound for Walker to close the game and walked McElfish. Weiss hit his second double of the day and scored McElfish.

The Knights had Mantle in scoring position after Gabriel's single to short stop, but were unable to score and ended the game 7-3.

Southern Virginia takes on fellow CAC member Wesley College in a double header Friday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Dover, Del.
