Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Off to a strong start to the 2014 season, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team defeated Cabrini College, 3-1, for its second win of the day Friday evening at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va.
The Knights (2-0) took the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-20, before falling in the third, 22-25. Southern Virginia quickly recovered in the fourth set for a 25-19 set win and match victory to avoid a deciding fifth stanza.
Playing in all four sets, freshman Calyn Barry led the Knights with 12 kills on 33 attempts, committing only five attack errors in the match. The Alpine, Utah, native also recorded two service aces, four digs and two block assists.
Junior Shannon Romito and freshman Vanessa Pawlak both logged 11 kills in the match and totaled 56 attacks. Pawlak had eight kills in the Knights' matchup with Bridgewater just hours before to tally a sum of 19 kills on the night. She also had10 digs while Romito achieved two block assists. Senior Kaitlyn Eaton was fourth on the team with nine kills in the game.
Setters Katelynn Tlustek and Valerie Arkansas earned respective assist totals of 31 and 13 assists in the second game to lead the offensive attack. Eaton led the way with four aces. Freshman April Bennett led Southern Virginia with 20 digs, while freshman McKenna Koster recorded 12 to go with Pawlak's 10.
Freshman Hannah Phillips, Barry and Eaton each registered two block assists in the game.
The Knights continue play in the Captains Classic Saturday afternoon with matchups against Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and Meredith at 4 p.m.
