Volleyball Drops Both Matches on Second Day of Captains Classic

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—After going 2-0 on the first day of competition in the Captains Classic in Newport News, Va., the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches Saturday afternoon on the final day, falling to both Meredith College and Virginia Wesleyan by 3-1 scores.

Match One: Meredith 3, Southern Virginia 1

The first match saw the Knights take the first game 25-19 before the Avenging Angels won three straight by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19 to give Southern Virginia its first loss of the season.

Despite overcoming Meredith in kills and assists, the 36 errors committed by Southern Virginia compared to the Avenging Angels' 22 proved to be the difference maker in the match.

Senior Kaitlyn Eaton led all Southern Virginia players with 15 kills on 32 attempts while also contributing two blocks and five digs. Freshman Valerie Arkansas split time with Katelynn Tlustek at the setter position, both giving the Knights 19 and 17 assists, respectively.

April Bennett led all Southern Virginia players with 14 digs on defense, while Shannon Romito and Vanessa Pawlek had eight and seven kills, respectively, for the Knights.

Match Two: Virginia Wesleyan 3, Southern Virginia 1

Match two had Virginia Wesleyan take a quick 2-0 lead after winning 25-17 and 25-19. The Knights cut the deficit to one by taking set three by a 25-22 score, but it was not enough as the Marlins would win a tough game four, 28-26.

Pawlak came away with six kills to go along with 14 digs in the match. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Phillips gave the Knights seven kills of her own, while Bennett etched out 32 digs for the Southern Virginia squad.

Eaton again led Southern Virginia with 10 kills on 19 attempts, while contributing 5 blocks on the defensive end. For her outstanding performance in four matches, the Syracuse, Utah, native was named to the Captains Classic All-Tournament team. Eaton finished the tournament ranked fourth with a .390 hitting percentage, while leading all players with 17 blocks.

Volleyball returns to action next Friday, Sept. 5, when it travels to the Washington & Lee Tournament in Lexington, Virginia. The Knights will face off against Birmingham-Southern at 2:30 p.m.
