SALEM, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team had limited trouble against Mary Baldwin College Saturday afternoon at Bast Gym in Salem, Virginia, rolling past the Fighting Squirrels in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-15, to take a 3-0 victory at the Roanoke College Maroon Classic.
This was the second time this week that the Knights faced off against Mary Baldwin.
First year players Hannah Phillips and Vanessa Pawlak led all Southern Virginia hitters with seven kills apiece, to go along with 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Katelynn Tlustek helped offensively at the setter position, recording a team-best 21 assists.
On the defensive side of the net, defensive specialist April Bennett again led the Knights (6-5) with 17 digs, keeping Mary Baldwin hitters in check for most of the match.
Katelyn Rice led the Fighting Squirrels (0-7) with six kills, while also recording nine digs.
Volleyball returns to the Maroon Classic tomorrow to play in its final two matches of the tournament. The Knights match up against Methodist College at 11 a.m., followed by Ferrum College at 1 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
