SALEM, Va.—After sweeping Mary Baldwin in straight sets in its first match of the day, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team took the court again Friday evening, defeating Meredith College 3-0 by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23, in Bast Gym as part of the Roanoke College Maroon Classic.
This was the second time the two squads have met this season. The Knights (7-5) avenged an early-season loss to Meredith (4-4) by dominating all facets of the match, recording more kills, assists and digs than its opponent.
Offensively, freshman Vanessa Pawlak led Southern Virginia with 11 kills on 23 attempts. The Carthage, Missouri, native also pitched in 16 kills for the Knights. Setter Valerie Arkansas gave the Knights a season-best 48 assists to lead all players.
On defense, April Bennett showed her defensive prowess by recording a career-best 44 digs throughout the match.
Kaitlyn Eaton and Calyn Barry also pitched in nine kills apiece, while Shannon Romito gave the Knights eight kills of her own.
Volleyball returns to the Maroon Classic tomorrow to play its final two matches of the tournament. The Knights match up against Methodist College at 11 a.m., followed by Ferrum College at 1 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
