FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team fell in its season opener to the Methodist Monarchs, 22-2, Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
The Monarchs attacked the Knight defense and gained a quick 5-0 lead until junior midfielder Rainey Whitworth found her way into scoring position to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Maddi Ronelli answered back for the Monarchs with her second goal for a 6-1 advantage. Freshman Megan Barfuss found the back of the net for the Knights' second and final goal of the day. The Monarch offense netted six more shots to end the half 12-6. Methodist managed 10 more goals during the second half to claim the win.
Whitworth had four shots on goal and won two draw controls, Zoe Bradshaw and Barfuss each had two shots on goal and one draw control. Samantha Jones and Sarah Vanderwende each had one shot on goal. Vanderwende also contributed five draw controls.
Cassie Walter led the Monarchs with eight goals and four draw controls. Hope Motahari added three goals. Emily Brennan, Zhane' Ruffin, Sareena Coleman, Bana Terenzi, Molly O'Hara and Emily Creasy added to the Monarch success.
The Knights will hit the road to face Ferrum College Tuesday, Feb. 24. The first draw control is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Adams Stadium.
