BRIDGEWATER, Va.—Seeking its first victory of the season, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team traveled to Bridgewater, Virginia, Saturday afternoon to take on the Bridgewater College Eagles but came up empty as it fell by a 19-2 score at Jopson Field.
It was all Bridgewater from the get-go as the Eagles scored the first nine points of the match before junior Rainey Whitworth scored an unassisted goal for Southern Virginia with five minutes to go in the first half.
Bridgewater went on to score four more in the last five minutes to take a 13-1 lead at the intermission.
The Knights looked poised for a strong second half, scoring the first goal as Claire Houghtaling found the back of the net off a Zoe Bradshaw assist. That would be the last goal Southern Virginia would get, however, as the Eagle defense did not let the Knights score in the final 25 minutes of action.
Houghtaling led Southern Virginia with three shots on the afternoon while Whitworth finished with two shots on goal.
Bradshaw, Megan Barfuss and Sarah Vanderwende also had shots for Southern Virginia.
Goalkeeper Cammie Miller made 15 saves for the Knights in all 60 minutes of action.
Jesse Colligan led all players on the afternoon, earning five goals on nine shots.
Women's lacrosse is off for three days before playing its 2015 home opener next Wednesday as it hosts Randolph College. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
