Women's Lacrosse Falls to Columbia

Box Score

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite Rainey Whitworth's career high of five goals and a hat trick by Zoe Bradshaw the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team lost in the final second against Columbia College (S.C) by a score of 11-10 Thursday night at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.

Kendra Blackstock of Columbia gave the Koalas a 1-0 advantage early in the first half. Whithworth fought her way through the defense to even the score. Blackstock and Whitworth battled back and netted one more goal apiece to balance the score at 2-2.

Bradshaw took advantage of a free position shot to give the Knights its only lead of the night. The one goal lead was short lived as Devon Walter and Tiffany Tortorello  of Columbia took control of the game off of one free position shot a piece. Walter ended the half with one more goal for the largest lead of the night, 5-3.

The Knights were quick to fight back as Bradshaw blew past the Koala defense to cut the deficit 5-4. Rainey Whitworth tied up the score yet again off of her first free position shot. Columbia's Blackstock answered back off a free position shot of her own.

Claire Houghtaling and Whitworth teamed up on offense to balance the beam for the fifth time. Walter and Blackstock netted two more goals for an 8-6 lead but Whitworth was relentless on the offense and evened the score after back-to-back goals.

Two more Koala goals by Blackstock and McKenna Buckley gave a two-goal advantage. Houghtaling teamed up with Bradshaw for her second goal of the evening. 30 seconds later Bradshaw followed with her third of the night to tie up the game 10-10.

It seemed as if the two squads would battle it out in over time, but with half a second left the Knights drew a foul. Columbia managed to put the final free position shot of the game past the goalie to claim the victory, 11-10.

Goalkeeper Cammi Miller picked up 12 saves for a 52.2 save percentage on the night for a total of 71 career saves.

The Knights host Salisbury University on Friday, March 20 for its second league game of the season. The first draw control is scheduled at 3 p.m. at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
