BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team remained winless Tuesday afternoon as it fell to the Sweet Briar College Vixen by an 18-6 score at Babcock Field in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
Sweet Briar jumped out to a 4-0 lead ten minutes into the game before Claire Houghtaling and Rainey Whitworth netted two goals within 50 seconds of one another, giving the Knights its first points of the game.
The Vixen scored again two minutes later, but another Whitworth goal—a free position shot—kept the game tight midway through the first half.
The Sweet Briar offense then ignited as it outscored Southern Virginia the rest of the half by an 8-1 margin, taking a 14-3 lead into the intermission. Junior midfielder Zoe Bradshaw scored the Knights' final goal of the first frame.
A second half comeback was unsuccessful for the visitors as Sweet Briar maintained control for the last 30 minutes of play, limiting Southern Virginia to just two second half goals.
Bradshaw and Whitworth scored the second half goals, en route to leading the Knights with three and two goals, respectively, for the game.
Goalkeeper Cammi Miller played all 60 minutes in goal for Southern Virginia, making 13 saves on 31 shots.
Genny Kelly and Kelsey Barta led Sweet Briar with four goals each on the afternoon.
Women's lacrosse returns to CAC action this Friday as it hosts St. Mary's College (Md.) at The Fields. The first draw control is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Buena Vista, Virginia.
