FROSTBURG, Md.—The Southern Virginia University baseball team was unable to avenge an early season loss to No. 12 Frostburg State University, falling to the Bobcats by a 5-1 score Wednesday afternoon at Bob Wells Field in Frostburg, Maryland.
The Knight's offense was stifled by Frostburg pitchers Ryan Callahan and Nick Huff as it recorded just one run on four hits for the game.
Southern Virginia (5-11, 4-6 CAC) threatened early in the game when, in the top of the first, CJ Andrus walked and Madison Hildebrandt singled through the right side. Both runners advanced to second and third after a Masen Fenn groundout, but would get no further as Giovanni Prado lined out to the third baseman to end the threat.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Frostburg State centerfielder Nick Walker tripled off Knight pitcher Chris Madison to start the inning. Ricky Brady then had an RBI single through the right side to bring in Walker and give the Bobcats their first run of the game.
Madison held the Frostburg (20-2, 11-1 CAC) offense in check the rest of the inning, and in the bottom of the fifth before Southern Virginia responded with a run of its own in the top half of the sixth inning.
Freshman outfielder Luke Smith singled to start things off, then advanced to second off an Andrus sacrifice bunt. Hildebrandt was then hit-by-pitch before Fenn singled to the left side to bring in Smith and tie the score at 1-1.
The Bobcats quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning as Walker had a two-run homerun over the left centerfield wall, making the lead 3-1 in favor of Frostburg.
Southern Virginia looked to respond in the final three innings of play, but were unsuccessful as it recorded just one hit off Bobcat relief pitcher Nick Huff.
Four different Knights had each of the four hits in the game, while Madison (1-3) took the loss in the decision. The Crozet, Virginia, native gave up four runs on eight hits while recording a season-high six strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.
Brady led all Frostburg hitters, going 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI.
Baseball is back in action tomorrow for a home stint against the University of Mary Washington. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Rockbridge County High School in Lexington, Virginia.
