BUENA VISTA, Va.—Playing in its final regular season home game, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Christopher Newport University by a 20-3 score on Senior Day at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
During halftime of the game, seniors Maura Cadiente, Darien Sorensen and Samantha Jones were honored, along with assistant coach Jamie Wolfertz—in her final season with the Knights—for their contributions to Southern Virginia on the field and in the classroom.
Southern Virginia (0-14, 0-7) scored all three of its goals in the first half as it looked to slow down Christopher Newport.
Junior midfielder Zoe Bradshaw found the back of the net at the 26:13 mark off a free position shot, giving the Knights their first goal of the game.
After Captain Catie Chess scored consecutive goals to give the visitors a 5-1 lead, junior Rainey Whitworth scored her 33rd goal of the season to cut the Knights deficit to three.
Attack Claire Houghtaling then scored off a Whitworth assist with five minutes left in the first frame to give Southern Viginia it's final goal of the contest.
Christopher Newport (9-6, 5-2 CAC) scored three more goals in the last five minutes—taking an 11-3 lead heading into the intermission—before scoring nine unanswered in the second half.
In goal, Cammi Miller made 10 saves in all 60 minutes of play for the Knights.
Women's lacrosse is off for two days before traveling north to take on Wesley College in its final game of the season. The first draw control is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Dover, Delaware.
