COVINGTON, Va.—In their last home double-header of the year the Southern Virginia baseball team split a conference double header with York College, falling 10-5 in game one and earning a 12-2 victory in game two.
"Today was good for us," said head coach Logan Mann, "we were able to clean up our defense in game two and hit well as a team. We'll see if we can't take this momentum into next week and continue to improve."
Game One
The Spartans (7-15, 5-4 CAC) jumped to an early 9-0 lead after three innings with the help of a seven-run second that included a York College grand slam.
The Knights (7-16, 3-6 CAC) got on the board in the fourth inning as Marcus Begg and Nick Carter scored on a Ryan Saunders single up the middle and Josh Hilburn sacrifice fly, respectively.
In the seventh and ninth innings Begg recorded RBI singles, finishing game one 5-5. Jordan Nase also scored in the ninth, giving the Knights their fifth and final point of the game.
Brevin Baessler earned three hits in game one, including a double.
Colin Bigelow started on the mound for the Knights, striking out three and allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Brandon Cattich and Justin Cooper also saw time on the mound.
Game Two
Game two was Southern Virginia all the way and senior left-hander Gage Bigelow pitched a seven-inning shutout, striking out four and allwoing five hits.
The Knights scored in the bottom of the first inning for the early lead as Hilburn and Nase scored on a Begg single. Begg would later score on a sacrifice fly by Davis Jones.
Southern Virgina got four more in the third as Jordan Keefer and Nase recorded RBIs.
The Knights scored in all but two innings. Jones, who doubled twice, and Nase finished with three RBIs apiece while Begg added two.
Tayler Peterson relieved Bigelow in the eighth, allowing five hits and two runs.
CAC action continues on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Frostburg State.
