BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia men's lacrosse team defeated Wesley College 13-10 on Wednesday for their first Capital Athletic Conference victory in program history.
The Wolverines (2-4, 0-1 CAC) took an early 2-0 lead three minutes into the game but the Knights (2-3, 1-1 CAC) responded by scoring four goals of their own from three different players. Southern Virginia went into halftime with a 9-6 lead.
After scoring first in the second half Wesley cut the Knights' lead to one goal at the end of the third quarter. Payton Kimber scored two goals in the fourth quarter to secure the win for the Knights.
Kimber led the Knights with four goals and one assist. Zach Danneman scored a hat trick and added one assist. Spencer Tunick added to the offense by scoring two goals and Casey Rich found the back of the net twice and recorded two assists. Mike Bangerter and Anthony Good each scored one goal.
Logan Lund won 18 of 27 face-offs and led the Knights with 12 ground balls. Ian Arave recorded 12 saves on 22 shots in goal.
When asked about his first conference victory as head coach at Southern Virginia, Jason Lamb said, "I'm so proud of our guys, they are working hard and do everything we ask. Getting our first win in the CAC is truly great for our young program. It's validating to everyone involved, hard work pays off!"
The Knights continue conference play on Saturday, March 12 at the University of Mary Washington. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
