Seventh Inning Rally Not Enough for Knights

Box Score

By Sam Armstrong

FROSTBURG. Md. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team lost a hard-fought Capital Athletic Conference game against Frostburg State on Thursday afternoon by a score of 9-5.

The Knights (8-20, 2-8 CAC) took an early 2-1 lead after two innings before a 90-minute rain and lightning delay halted action.

The Bobcats (12-10, 4-5 CAC) only had the one scoreless inning, tallying 20 hits for the game, including four doubles and a home run.

Going into the seventh inning down 7-2, the Knights mounted a three-run rally to cut the lead to two. Riley Daniels doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch, Zach McNally scored him with a sacrifice fly to left field. Senior Jordan Keefer then doubled, plating Cole Critchfield, who had previously been walked. The very next at bat, Ryan Morin traded places with Keefer, smacking a double of his own and picking up the RBI.

Southern Virginia third baseman Zach McNally had a great day at the plate, picking up three RBIs. The Knights' defense committed only one error, and middle infielders Ryan Morin and Riley Daniels turned a pair of double plays in the late innings.

Left-hander Justin King was tagged with the loss in his five innings on the mound.

Southern Virginia takes the field again on Saturday for a doubleheader against Penn St.-Harrisburg. Game one is set to start at 12:00 p.m. at Rockbridge County High School in Lexington, Va.
