DOVER, Del. – The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team clinched the final spot in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, beating Wesley 14-9 on the road Saturday afternoon.
After a slow start, with just three goals scored in the first quarter, the Knights (6-8, 3-5 CAC) found their offensive rhythm and the back of the net six times in the second period.
With a 7-4 lead at the intermission, the Knights outscored the Wolverines (4-12, 0-8 CAC) by a goal in the remaining quarters.
In the first quarter, Ryan Larsen found the back of the net on a pass from Spencer Tunick to tie the game up 1-1. Wesley snuck in a goal a minute later.
Shawn Lamb scored the first goal of the second quarter, on a pass from Casey Rich. The Knights finished out the period on a 3-0 run from Rich, and man-down goals from Lamb and Anthony Good.
Rich led all players with four goals and two assists. Lamb finished with a hat trick of his own and an assist.
Faceoff specialist Logan Lund found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, just seven seconds after Wesley scored to open the fourth quarter.
Cayd Rich, who had two goals against Mary Washington two weeks ago, also chipped in a goal.
Ian Arave played a complete game in goal, recording 15 saves and earning his third win of the year.
With the win, the Knights clinch the number-five seed of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. Southern Virginia will head to Christopher Newport on Wednesday, April 19 for a 4 p.m. match.
