Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with Loss to Saints

Box Score

By Sam Armstrong

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team opened its season on Wednesday afternoon, falling 20-4 to Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount.

The Saints (1-0, 1-0 CAC) got on the board first with two quick goals, to which Southern Virginia midfielder Hannah King answered with a goal of her own. The Saints would go on to rattle off 11 consecutive goals to put the Knights (0-1, 0-1 CAC) down 13-1 at the half.

After a trio of Marymount goals to open the second period, King and midfielder Lauren Thatcher scored back-to-back goals within two minutes of each other. King would complete the hat-trick with six minutes left in the game to round out the scoring for the Knights.

Southern Virginia struggled to create opportunities in the game, finishing with only eight shots to the Saints' 37, but they did manage to put six of those attempts on frame.

King took advantage of her chances, putting all three of her shots in the back of the net, while Thatcher, Miklain Hardy, and Holly Ryan each tallied a shot on goal.

Jessica Jaster started in goal for the Knights finishing with seven saves in the loss.

Southern Virginia takes the field again next Tuesday as Emmanuel (Ga.) comes to town. The game is slated to start at 4:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
