BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team won their home-opener Thursday night, beating Roanoke College 3-1. The win snaps a short three-game losing skid.

In the first set, the Knights (6-3) started slowly with the Maroons (7-5) being the aggressors. Southern Virginia could not get back into the game falling in the set, 25-21.

Southern Virginia was able to get in a rhythm in the second set and went on a dominant run defeating Roanoke 25-15.

Set three was almost identical to the second set, where the Knights ran a well-balanced attack giving them the upper hand and taking the set 25-16.

The Maroons fought back with several strong rallies but were unable to stave off an impressive showing from the Knights losing the final set 25-22.

Notable performances came from Hailey Lohnes with game-high 16 kills and Ella Burrows, who earned 12 kills and a tremendous kill percentage of .321. LaRee Crocket found teammates all over the court, totaling 39 assists, and Mykynli Knight secured the back row with 15 digs. Freshman Julia Hopkin started out of her normal role and collected five kills and eight digs.

"The first game we had to settle in this was our home-opener, and so we needed to calm ourselves and play our game," said Head Coach Debby Baker. "The rest of the match we made the necessary changes and were able to find a balance on the court. I am proud of our girls, we had some great performances, overall this was a good win."

The Knights next game starts conference play Saturday, Sept. 22 against Salisbury at 2:00 p.m. at Knight Arena.
