Women's Volleyball Splits Weekend Trip at St. Mary's (Md.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The Southern Virginia women's volleyball team played in their third and fourth games in four days, splitting their two games on Saturday afternoon. The Knights swept St. Mary's 25-18, 25-17, and 25-21. Southern Virginia fell to Washington and Lee in three sets 25-11, 26-24, and 25-20. 

Southern Virginia (13-8) dominated in their first game of the day against St. Mary's. Junior Lindsay Wiedrich had one of her best games of the season hitting .333. Wiedrich added two blocks to go along with her impressive day of hitting. Emma Steiger had a game-high 16 digs at the libero position. Elle Warnick and LaRee Crockett split time at setter. Warnick dished out 15 assists while Crockett added 12. 

Freshman Emma Steiger got the Knights off on the right track, recording two service aces in the first set. Southern Virginia took the first set of the match 25-18. 

The Knights scored the first point of the second set and never looked back. Freshman Courtney Singleton led the way with four kills in the set to push Southern Virginia to another set win. 

Southern Virginia had its best serving of the match in the third set. Singleton recorded three service aces, and LaRee Crockett recorded two of her own to lock down the victory and complete the sweep. 

Game two showcased cross-town rivals squaring off for the second time this season. Washington and Lee got revenge from an early-season loss against the Knights. 

Freshmen Emma Steiger and Courtney Singleton helped keep the fighting spirit up for the Knights in the match. Steiger played incredible defense with 34 digs in the match. Singleton hit .256 along with a game-high 11 kills. Taryn Warner and Ryan Dubinsky each had two blocks on the night in a strong performance at the net. 

Although giving up the first set to the Generals, the Knights made it tough for them in the second set, forcing extra points. Two final kills from W&L gave them the 2-0 lead in the match.

The Generals were relentless against the Knights. Being up by five late in the third set, they did not allow Southern Virginia to come back. A final service ace completed the sweep against the Knights. 

Southern Virginia will get well-deserved rest before traveling to Christopher Newport on Wednesday. The match is set to begin at 6 pm.
