Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to Sweet Briar at Knight Stadium.
In the first half, the Knights' (0-12, 0-1) offense saw limited action as they were unable to place a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Kyla Nase collected a pair of saves after being challenged twice at goal by the Vixens' (5-7) offense to make the score at the half tied 0-0.
The Vixens opened the third quarter with two more shots on goal with each denied by Nase maintaining the 0-0 tie. The Knights offense responded moving the ball up the field when Makayla Hillian had the first opportunity but was stopped by Sweet Briar goalie Rosemary Austin.
In the final quarter of play, the defense remained vital for both teams as neither team could score to send the game into overtime 0-0.
After a pair of unsuccessful penalty corners, In the 61st minute of overtime, the Knights' Elizabeth Sorto shot on goal but was denied by Austin.
One minute later, in the 62nd minute, the Vixens' Ingrid Kalwitzblanco sealed the game on a goal from Alexis Jones for the 1-0 victory.
Sweet Briar outshot Southern Virginia 13-6 while also winning the battle of penalty corners 8-6.
Hillian, Sorto, and Mariely Aquin led the Knights with two shots each while Nase notched four saves at goal, and Paige Anderson adding a defensive save.
Southern Virginia will return to Capital Athletic Conference play as they face St. Mary's (Md.) Friday, Oct. 18, starting at 6 p.m.
