Box Score 2 COVINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team split a doubleheader with Frostburg State on Wednesday, winning game one 14-6 and falling in game two 6-5.
After allowing four runs in the top of the first to the Bobcats (13-20-1, 3-17-1 CAC), the Knights (15-17, 6-14 CAC), the Knights' pitching settled down and only allowed two runs the rest of the game.
Southern Virginia's offense got going as the game went on, scoring three runs in the third inning and six in the fifth, ending the game with 14 runs in just eight innings.
Seven different Knights had hits in the game, with five finishing with multiple. Third baseman Bridger Taylor led the way with three hits, two RBIs, and a walk. Canon Anderson, Ryan Morin, Brady Lamb, and Hunter Blunt each had two hits, with Morin leading the team with three RBIs.
Freshman Austin Forsyth started the game on the mound, giving up three earned runs and striking out five in four innings. Fellow freshman Marshall Davis picked up his second win of the season by throwing four frames, allowing two runs.
In game two, the Bobcats lead 6-1 after three innings, and then neither team was able to put a run on the board for four innings. The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to 6-5, but they were unable to score in the ninth.
Southern Virginia racked up 12 hits in the game, with Lamb staying hot with three hits, a walk, and an RBI. Anderson and Caleb Layden also saw the ball well, each finishing with two hits.
Mike Stirling pitched two innings in the loss, while Jaxon Newbold came on in relief to throw five shutout innings.
The Knights will finish up the regular season on Monday with a non-conference game matchup against the Apprentice School. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
