Knights Routed by Tigers, Fall 5-0

SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Southern Virginia University field hockey team fell 5-0 against Sewanee Saturday afternoon at Puett Field.

The Knights' (0-5) defense stood tall in the first quarter holding the Tigers (2-3) scoreless until the 3:38 mark when Alex Hornsby scored an unassisted goal for an early 1-0 lead.

Sewanee added to their lead in the second quarter to take a two-goal lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Tigers distanced themselves from the Knights after finding the back of the net three more times to take a 5-0 advantage.

The Knights for the second consecutive game shutout the Tigers in the final quarter of play but were unable to shrink the Sewanee lead, making the final score 5-0.

The duo of Kyla Nase and Grace DeGruccio combined for 25 total saves at goal for the Knights while Emily Jacobson recorded the lone shot on goal.

Southern Virginia returns home for their home-opener on Sept. 18 as they will host Eastern Mennonite at 6:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
