Box Score BRYN ATHYN, Pa. — The Southern Virginia University field hockey team was defeated 2-1 in a tough matchup Saturday afternoon against Bryn Athyn at General Nelson Field.
The Knights (0-8) opened the first quarter shutting out the Lions (1-5) but were unable to capitalize offensively to end the quarter 0-0.
In the second quarter, the Lions struck first on a Lexie Dubois goal with the assist credited to Katherine Halle. Bryn Athyn took the 1-0 lead into the half.
The third quarter remained in favor of the Lions until less than four minutes of play remained when Mariely Aquin made program history. Aquin drove the left side of the field and shot past the goalie, finding the back of the net for the program's first goal in its young history tying the game at 1-1.
The Lions responded 37 seconds later with Dubois's second goal of the afternoon giving them the 2-1 edge.
The Knights valiantly attempted to score, but each team did not allow a score in the final quarter of play giving the Lions the 2-1 victory.
The Knights were outshot by the Lions 23-5 while also having fewer opportunities with penalty corners (15-2).
Aquin led Southern Virginia with two shots with each on goal while Paige Anderson recorded the only other attempt on goal.
Kyla Nase tallied nine saved at goal for the Knights.
Southern returns home Wednesday, Oct. 2 as they will host Roanoke at 6 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
