Southern Virginia Cheer Places Second at Reach the Beach Cheer Competition

OCEAN CITY, Md. — The Southern Virginia University cheer team competed this past weekend at the Reach the Beach Cheer Competition, placing second overall in the Advanced College Division.

"I'm so pleased with their performances this weekend," said head coach Neely Pendleton. "They put in a tremendous amount of hard work, and I am so proud. They are already hungry for that first-place finish next year, and I can't wait to help get them there."

The Knights competed twice within 12 hours on Saturday to avoid competition on Sunday. The field consisted of six universities, with four competing in the Advanced College Division.

Southern Virginia started strong after not receiving any deductions and hitting a zero on the first performance. The Knights squad was the only team on the weekend to accomplish that impressive feat.

In their second performance of the day, the Knights received a slight deduction but managed to score higher than their previous performance. With the pair of stellar performances, Southern Virginia snuck into second-place, earning a score of 89.33 to beat a pair of Division II schools.

Gannon University, a Division II program, came away with the title after scoring a 92.36.
