Box Score 2 BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team had two impressive outings on Saturday afternoon, defeating Penn State-York 12-9 in game one and 13-3 in the second.
After the Lions (0-2) kicked off the first game with two runs in the top of the first, the Knights (8-3) answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Not to be outdone, the Lions plated five more runners in the top of the second to take a 7-6 advantage.
Southern Virginia's bats got hot again in the later innings, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to run away with the game. The consistent offensive attack was led by Will Parker (three hits, one RBI), Bridger Taylor (3 RBIs), and Brady Lamb (three hits, three RBIs).
Freshman Nolan Opp picked up his second win of the year in relief, lasting 4.1 innings and striking out four while giving up zero runs.
The Knights didn't wait around in game two, scoring four, two, and four runs in the first three frames to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Strong pitching kept the lead steady the rest of the way, and Southern Virginia took home the 13-3 victory as darkness forced the umpires to call the game after six innings.
11 different batters had a base-hit in the game, punctuated by junior Mitch Tyse's towering solo homer to left field in the third inning. Tyse finished the game with three RBIs.
Riley Daniels started on the hill and pitched phenomenally, striking out five and giving up one earned run in four innings pitched.
Southern Virginia will return to action after a week break against Alfred St. on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Parry McCluer High School.
