Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team kept its perfect season alive with a 20-2 victory over Randolph College Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Knights (5-0) made program history with the most wins to the start of the season without a loss.
Offensively for Southern Virginia, Alissa Johnson secured a season-high nine points in the form of seven goals and two assists while taking in eight draw controls and three ground balls. Chloe Mitchell recorded the hat trick on the night while Sydney Winterton locked in a season-high three points with one goal and two assists.
On the defensive end of the ball, Madilyn Pedroza recorded three saves on five total shots, and Mitchell secured a game-high three caused turnovers. Johnson and Kelsey Ray each added two caused turnovers.
The Knights began the game establishing a 9-0 lead midway through the first half of play sparked by Johnson's six goals. Allie Fields of Randolph (1-2) scored the first goal for the team at the 5:44 mark to make the new score 9-1. Natalie Rice scored two unassisted goals at the 5:34 and 2:20 mark to close out the first half of play.
At the break, Southern Virginia held the 11-1 lead led by Johnson's six goals. The Knights secured 8-of-5 draw controls while winning the ground ball battle 14-8. Southern Virginia outshot the Wildcats 28-5 and converted on one of two free-position shots.
The Knights continued the momentum into the second half of play, scoring nine of the ten total goals led by Hannah King's two goals. Sarah Perry of Randolph closed out the scoring after creating space from her defender to score the unassisted goal.
Southern Virginia ended the game outshooting the Wildcats 43-7 while converting on three of six free-position shots. The Knights held the groundball advantage 21-13 while taking in 18 of 24 draw controls.
Looking to keep their perfect season alive, Southern Virginia will take on William Peace on Thursday, Mar. 12. The opening draw is set for 2:30 p.m.
