Women's Lacrosse Extends Streak, Takes Down William Peace 21-7

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 21-7 victory over William Peace Thursday afternoon. 

Offensively for the Knights (6-0), freshman Alissa Johnson recorded a game-high six points in the form of five goals and one assist while Natalie Rice recorded two goals and three assists for five points. Senior Hannah King recorded five points of her own with four goals and one assist while Sydney Sewell and Chloe Mitchell each added a hat trick. 

On the defensive end of the ball, Holly Cunha and Kelsey Ray each recorded four caused turnovers on the day. Johnson, King, and Mitchell each contributed two out of the team's 20 total caused turnovers. 

Forty-five seconds into the game, Johnson got free from her defender to score an unassisted goal to put the Knights up 1-0 before Allison Schaper of William Peace (2-3) knotted the game at one off an unassisted goal. Southern Virginia used a 4-0 run sparked by a Mitchell goal to make the new score 5-1 with 22:16 remaining in the first half. Following another Pacer goal by Allison Schaper, the Knights again used a 3-0 run to extend their lead to six goals 8-2 with 12:55 on the clock. After a William Peace goal by Anne Evans, Southern Virginia closed out the first half scoring seven consecutive goals led by two Sewell goals. 

At the break, the Knights held onto the 15-3 lead led by three Johnson goals. Southern Virginia outshot the Pacers 27-4 while converting on two of three free-position attempts. The Knights held onto the 14-6 advantage on the ground balls and brought in 12 of 19 draw controls. 

Southern Virginia opened the second half of play, scoring two unanswered goals by King and Johnson, making the new score 17-3 with 21:28 on the clock. William Peace responded confidently with a 4-0 run of their own led by three Allison Schaper goals. The Knights closed out the game, scoring four consecutive goals to lock in their 21-7 victory over the pacers. 

The Knights outshot the Pacers 41-11 while taking in 17-of-30 draw controls. Southern Virginia dominated the ground ball battle holding onto the 29-14 advantage and converted 16-of-18 successful clears. 

Southern Virginia will look to keep its undefeated schedule alive with a matchup against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, Mar. 17. The time of the match is yet to be decided.
