Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team kept their undefeated season alive with a 21-3 victory over Sweet Briar Thursday night.
Offensively for the Knights (1-0), senior Hannah King recorded a game-high six points in the form of five goals and one assist while adding three draw controls and forcing five turnovers on the night. Lauren Thatcher followed King with six points of her own with one goal and five assists. Alissa Johnson chipped in four points of her own with three goals and one assist while Natalie Rice and Chloe Mitchell each added a hat trick.
Defensively for Southern Virginia, Tayllor Deim recorded four caused turnovers while tallying a game-high six ground balls. Sydney Sewell forced three turnovers while Jesse Call added two.
The Knights opened the first half of play jumping out to a commanding 7-0 lead over the Vixens (1-5) led by King's three goals with 20:41 on the clock. Sweet Briar added their first goal of the game after Kaylah Bailey scored off a Victoria Lawson feed.
Following the Vixens' goal, the Knights added two more goals to the scoreboard led by Rice's first goal of the game coming off a Sydney Winterton feed before Sweet Briar added another goal to make the new score 9-2 with 18:05 left in the first half of play. The Knights closed out the first half outscoring Sweet Briar 9-1 to go into the intermission with the 17-3 lead. King led all players with four first-half goals.
At the break, the Knights had the advantage at the draw circle 16-5 while controlling 13 out of 17 ground ball opportunities. Southern Virginia stayed perfect in the first half on clears going 5-for-5, and the Knights outshot Sweet Briar 24-5.
Thirty seconds into the second half, Johnson scored her third goal of the game to extend Southern Virginia's lead to 15 goals 18-3. With 24:38 remaining in the game, Jesse Call scored her first goal of the season off of a free position attempt, and two minutes later, King scored her fifth goal of the game to bring the new score to 20-3 with 22:20 on the clock. With 3:10 left in the game, Alex Vacanti converted on a free position attempt to score her second goal of the season and securing Southern Virginia's 21-3 victory over the Vixens.
The Knights ended the game going 21-for-26 on draw controls while dominating the ground ball battle 23- 14. Southern Virginia capitalized on three of four free-position shots while outshooting the Vixens 32-8 on the night.
Southern Virginia continues its season on the road taking on Randolph on Tuesday, Mar. 10. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
