BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team took on Mary Baldwin University in Knight Arena Tuesday night, sweeping the Fighting Squirrels on Senior Night.

Taryn Kartchner: 8 blocks, 5 kills, .308 hitting percentage

Courtney Pinkston: 16 kills, .343 hitting percentage, 4 service aces

Game Notes

First Set:

• The Knights build a solid 10-4 lead, capitalizing on Mary Baldwin's errors
• The Squirrels fought back, cutting their deficit to two points 11-9
• Southern Virginia used an 8-2 run to jump back up 19-11 led by four Courtney Pinkston kills
• Both teams ending the set trading points, but ultimately the Knights took the 1-0 lead 25-20

Second Set:

• Taryn Kartchner got things going to start the second set, using two kills and two blocks, both assisted by Brenna Clyde, to bring the team to a 13-4 lead
• Again, both teams exchanged points, with the Knights taking set two 25-12

Third Set:

• Southern Virginia's defense shined in the final set, setting a season-low record for points allowed in a set with eight
• Courtney Pinkston led the first charge, using two kills and an ace to put the team up 4-0
• Midway through the set, went on a 10-0 run led by Katelyn Chamberlain's three service aces
• At the end of the set, Taryn Kartchner and Sydney Hopkin finished the game with a final block to lock in the sweep for the Knights

Southern Virginia hits the road for another double-header weekend, taking on Salem College and Pfeiffer on Saturday, October 9. Game one is scheduled for 10 am, and game two is slated for 2 pm.
