Slew Of Program Records Highlights Southern Virginia Track & Field’s Opening Weekend

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field teams wrapped their opening weekend of indoor competition at the Liberty Kickoff on Friday, and the Colonel Bev Read Opener on Saturday.

Several of the Knights' top distance runners made the drive down to Lynchburg to compete in their first 3K of the season. On the men's side, Taylor Weiland and Carter Johnson toed the line and ran 9:18.29 and 10:07.43 respectively.

Fresh off her appearance at the NCAA Division lll Cross Country championship, Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong led the women with a time of 10:13.69, smashing her personal best and setting a new school record. Sasha Braddy also delivered a personal best in 10:33.90.

Colonel Bev Read Opener

Saturday brought the short distance and field athletes to the track. Zeke Newman started his season on a high note with a personal best in the 300m, good enough for 8th overall in the field of nineteen and a new program record.

McCormick Johnson and Jak Martin provided Southern Virginia the best individual finishes of the day, taking second and third in the men's pole vault. Joseph Hughes also snagged a second place finish in the 1,000m with a time of 2:36.92.

On the women's side, the Knights' returning All-American Marin Simons cleared a height of 1.55m (5' 1") on her first attempt to place seventh in the high jump.

Southern Virginia's lone event victory came in the women's distance medley relay. The quartet of Bayleigh Redd-Armstrong, Tessa Miller, Sasha Braddy, and Kaylee Horner ran 12:45.95, two seconds ahead of VMI who finished second.

Looking Ahead

The team won't see competition until after the holiday break when they visit Roanoke College for the Finn Pincus Invite. Events are scheduled for January 16-17 at the Cregger Center in Salem, Virginia.
