Driven to Compete: Southern Virginia University 2024-2025 Men’s Golf Season Recap

Buena Vista, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's golf team closed out its 2025 campaign with one of the most successful seasons in program history. Behind a roster filled with fresh faces and rising talent, the Knights surged to a national ranking of No. 42—up from No. 110 last year—and set multiple team and individual records along the way.

The team, which expanded from 14 to 17 players, welcomed 13 newcomers and returned only four golfers from last year's roster. Despite the overhaul, the Knights quickly found their rhythm, capturing two tournament victories and watching three different individuals win titles throughout the season.

One of the most defining moments came at the USA South Conference Championship, where the Knights posted their best finish and lowest 54-hole team score (+48) since joining the league.

"Our team made incredible strides this year," said Head Coach Blair Garner. "To go from where we were a year ago to a top-50 program in the country says everything about their work ethic and belief in each other."

Nikko Taggert, a standout freshman, etched his name into the record books with a season average of 72.8—the lowest in program history—surpassing the previous mark held by Nathan Ouimette (73). Taggert also recorded three top-five finishes.

Carter Damron earned USA South Rookie of the Year honors after a consistent debut season, narrowly edging teammate Will Agnew, who also delivered strong performances, including a top-five finish.

Sophomore Dax Anderson shone in the fall, capturing two tournament wins and tying the second-best round in school history with a 67. Anderson also set the school's 36-hole scoring record at -5. Caden Bertnagole added to the historic fall season with a tournament victory of his own, matching the second-best round of 67.

Nick Johnson added two top-five finishes, while Agnew, Kaden Ford, and Michael McCaffrey each claimed one top-five finish apiece, showcasing the team's depth.

As the program moves forward, it bids farewell to two leaders who helped set the standard for Southern Virginia golf. Mason Schlensker, a four-year team member and captain, was honored with the USA South Sportsmanship Award.

"Mason has been the ultimate example of a student-athlete," said Coach Garner. "His leadership has made a lasting impact on the younger players."

Michael McCaffrey, who transferred from Miami Ohio and played three seasons at SVU, played a critical role both on and off the course.

"Michael not only led our team in competition," added Garner, "but elevated our entire culture with his intensity and commitment."

With a new core and a powerful sense of direction, Southern Virginia men's golf concludes its 2025 season proud of its progress and excited for the future.
