GREENSBORO, N.C. In a battle between two schools looking for their first win of the season, Southern Virginia Football could not break the streak and lost 48-6 to Guilford. SVU fell behind early as the Quakers were able to record the first three touchdowns of the game. Daniel Bokinsky received a pass from Sam Trulock in the second quarter to get on the board, and looked to be in striking distance of the hosts. Momentum was lost for the Knights when they failed to convert on the two-point conversion.

The Quakers had recorded scoring drives of 77, 68 and 75 yards prior to the SVU score. Guilford used a quick attack against the Knights as they averaged only 5.3 plays per drive on their scoring drives. The highlight for these drives was a 77-yard run by Mike Williams in the first quarter.

SVU racked up 150 yards rushing in one of their best ground performances of the year. The passing game also performed well as SVU threw for 187 yards, and got the lone score of the game through the air. But the Knights were undone again by a familiar foe in turnovers. SVU coughed up the ball six times on the day with two lost fumbles and four interceptions. The Knights were also unable to stop a balanced Quaker attack with 275 yards rushing and 242 yards passing.

"It can be very frustrating to see us not protect the ball like we should," said Head Coach DeLane Fitzgerald. "We need to hold on to it more on runs, and we have to provide protection for Sam (Trulock), so that he doesn't force passes, or throw blindly. We need to do a better job in keeping that ball"

Quinton Garrus had a standout game as he rushed for 124 yards on 18 carries. A trio of quarterbacks was used by the Knights to get the 187-yards through the air. Bokinsky had a noticeable impact on the pass, as he recorded 6 receptions for 55-yards to go along with the touchdown for the Knights.

Vernon Joines had another solid performance for the defense as he recorded 9 total tackles. Chad John and Matt Mellor followed up with 8 total tackles for the night. The Knight defense may have had struggles in stopping the Quakers, but SVU coaches saw promise for the unit as they forced five fumbles and recovered three.

"I see progress in spurts, but we have not put it all together yet," said Fitzgerald. "It's hard when you see our results, but I'm very proud of the effort. We need to refine it, and execute a lot better. With a two week break, it should give us time to heal up, and focus on the mistakes we've made. We'll fix them and get it right."

SVU falls to 0-6 on the season. The next game for the Knights will be the Homecoming Game, Oct. 17, when SVU squares off against George Mason. Game time is set for 1:00 at Parry McCluer High School.
