DOVER, De. The Southern Virginia football team found out why the
Wesley Wolverines are ranked #3 in NCAA D.III, as the hosts ran
past the Knights on their way to a 52-3 win. The Knights were
coming in to the game with momentum from a first time victory over
ODAC foe Guilford, and were looking to give Wesley a stern test.
the Wolverines, clicking on all cylinders this season at 7-0, had
other plans, and quickly went to work against Southern
Virginia.
The Wolverines kicked off first, and promptly stopped the SVU
drive, and turned around for a quick score. A 38-yard punt return
put the hosts in SVU territory, and the first touchdown of the game
quickly followed. The first quarter touchdown would be the first of
four in the quarter, and effectively ended the game for the
Knights.
SVU received the ball again, but a fumble for the Knights gave
the ball immediately back to Wesley, and the hosts made SVU pay
with another quick scoring drive. The Knights were having troubles
moving the ball, and also struggled with turnovers, giving the ball
up 3-times on a fumble and two interceptions. Two more scores for
the Wolverines gave Wesley a 28-0 first quarter lead.
SVU could not find an answer for the quick strikes of the hosts,
as Wesley averaged two and a half minutes per scoring drive.
Linebacker Matt
Mellor was kept busy, as he recorded 9-tackles, with Brett Kassell called
upon to make a number of tackles in the secondary, as Wesley got
past the first levels of defense frequently.
Robert
Williams, Tommy
Davidson and Chad John also chipped
in 8-tackles, as the Knights' defense was kept busy all afternoon.
Offensively, the Knights found little going right, as Zach Garner went
5-for-17 with two interceptions. Severin
Rucker carried for a team leading 28-yards for the game. Tyler LeDoux
caught 2-passes for 29-yards. An offense that could do no wrong
against Guilford could only muster 97-yards of total offense.
With the game dying in the final moments, a 21-yard field goal
from Tyler Bowen
helped the Knights avoid the shutout. SVU had marched 40-yards in
close to three minutes, and the field goal gave the consolation
points after a strong drive to end the game.
The loss drops SVU to 3-5. The Knights will look to regroup as
they welcome traditional rival Apprentice Oct. 23. The Builders
faced off with Wesley the previous week, and found similar results.
SVU scored a win for the first time against Apprentice last year in
the Oyster Bowl, and will look for a two-game win streak against
the Builders when they face off at 1:00 pm at Parry McCluer High
School.
