In its first ever official New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game, the Southern Virginia University football team travels to Union, New Jersey, to take on Kean University Saturday afternoon at Kean Alumni Stadium.
The Knights are looking to pick up their first ever conference victory and first win of the 2014 season. In its most recent defeat, Southern Virginia fell to No. 4-ranked Wesley College last week in Dover, Delaware.
Quarterback Mitch Stevenson leads the Southern Virginia offense with 211.7 passing yards per game with five touchdowns on 42 completions. Junior wide receiver Kyler Harris owns a team-best 204 yards receiving on 10 receptions, while tight end Michael Carroll has 10 receptions of his own for 179 yards.
Senior Jerry Washington leads the rushing attack for the Knights, accumulating 169 yards on 49 rush attempts through three games.
Defensively, Matthew Gregory leads all Southern Virginia players with 31 tackles—12 solo and 19 assisted—while also leading the Knights with one interception. Linebackers Zach Englert and Colter Evans have teamed up for 56 total tackles, with the duo averaging nearly 19 tackles per game.
Kean University is also seeking its first win of the 2014 season. The Cougars have fallen victim to Albright College, Endicott College and in its most recent contest, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Offensively, Kean is led by quarterback Robert Meade, who has thrown for 262 yards with 23 completions and two touchdowns. Running back Damian Corredor leads the Cougar rushing attack with 165 yards on the season on 3.4 yards per carry.
Southern Virginia head coach Jason Walker's commentary heading into the game
Our kids are hungry to be able to prove something since we were picked last in the conference preseason ranking. It's fitting because we are new and no one really knows about us. We are excited to be a member of this conference and to be a good member of the conference. We hope to illustrate that we can be a good addition to the league and show that we belong in its caliber.
They have a dual quarterback system right now where they are employing an upperclassman junior and then a freshman that spends time with them. They have a couple of good running backs that run really hard.
They have a few receivers they like to go to that we'll have to be aware of and probably play some over-the-top help with.
We have to control the running game and be ready for their 10-personnel package and know where they are airing it out.
Southern Virginia Head Coach Jason Walker
Jason Walker enters his first season as head coach of the football program after being named to the position in April. Walker served as a defensive graduate assistant the past four years at Brigham Young University, where he learned defensive schemes from head coach Bronco Mendenhall and some of the nation's top defensive assistants.
Kean University Head Coach Dan Garrett
Dan Garrett was named head coach in July 2006, following three years as the Cougars' defensive coordinator. In 2011, Garrett guided Kean to its most successful season in program history as it won a school record 10 games while securing the NJAC title and making its first ever trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Garrett began his coaching career at Montclair State University—his alma mater—following a standout 1996 season in which he was named to the All-NJAC first team as linebacker and defensive end for the Red Hawks.
