Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J.—Despite trailing by just 10 points at the half and earning more first downs than its opponent, the Southern Virginia University football team fell to host Rowan University by a 25-6 score Saturday afternoon at Coach Wackar Stadium in Glassboro, New Jersey.
The Knights cut the Professor lead to 14-6 as the first half expired, but Rowan blocked the extra point attempt and returned it to the opposite end zone for two points to go into intermission with a 16-6 advantage and never looked back.
"We gave ourselves chances today but continued to make the same mistakes that have hounded us all season with our turnover count," said Southern Virginia head coach Jason Walker. "We made some stops on defense and we made plays on offense to put ourselves in contention, but again failed to take care of the ball. All we can do is continue to work on it and prepare ourselves for next week's game."
Southern Virginia quarterback Mitch Stevenson went 11-29 on the afternoon for 96 yards through the air and two interceptions. Jerry Washington led the Knight ground attack with 26 yards on 18 attempts. The Knights earned nine first downs on the day to the Profs' seven.
Rowan quarterback Bill McCarty went 5-10 on the day for 98 yards and one touchdown reception. Professor running back Withler Marcelin rushed for 76 yards on 25 attempts while Jahsiem Rover went for 24 yards on five carries.
The Profs got on the board first midway through the opening quarter when McCarty connected with Russ Forchion for a 59-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0. Forchion would lead the Prof receivers with 67 reception yards during the game on three catches.
Minutes into the second quarter, Stevenson had a pass intercepted by Rowan's Bobby Barbieri at the Knight 17-yard line that was returned for a touchdown to put the Profs up 14-0.
Southern Virginia continued to battle, forcing a Rowan punt with just under 3:30 remaining in the half and taking over at the Knight 43-yard line. Stevenson immediately connected with Angel Medina for a 37-yard completion to the Rowan 20-yard line.
Facing a 4th-and-2 at the Rowan five-yard line, Stevenson threw an interception that was called back due to a defensive holding, giving the Knights the ball back at the Prof two-yard line. Moments later, a Knight fumble recovered by Rowan at the five-yard line was again called back due to an offsides penalty on the Profs. Stevenson then punched it in from the one for the Knight touchdown of the day.
After a scoreless third period, Rowan's Tyler Knighton converted a 32-yard field goal to raise the Prof lead to 19-9 midway through the fourth.
Late in the game, Southern Virginia quarterback Rex Winslow threw an interception that was returned 31 yards for a touchdown by Rowan's Darren Dungee for the final score of 25-6.
The Knights return to action next weekend with an NJAC home game versus The College of New Jersey Saturday at noon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Virginia.
